Introduction and disambiguation

So it’s finally dawned on me that I should probably have some kind of on-line presence - in case anyone ever wanted to cyber-stalk me.

I want to make sure you’re cyber-stalking the right person so here are some disambiguating features:

I believe there’s another software developer called David Lucas in Brighton and Hove. I’m not that one - I’m the other one. I’m not usually in Brighton anymore either.

Any cyber-stalkers left? Anyone???

Music

I used to like the idea of being a musician. Two things that appealed:

  1. Being able to express things in an attractive likable way and by extension making myself attractive and likable and understood (e.g. I recall as a youngster listening to Mr Jones by Counting Crows and wishing I could do that).
  2. Staying up late and sleeping-in.

Unfortunately I’m no longer motivated by either aspect. I wake up early in the morning and have no intent to create a polished musical product for people’s listening pleasure. I’m more or less indifferent to my listener’s suffering. I just engage in sonic experimentations, making it up as I go along. Sometimes I find it helps me work through emotions. I’m usually able to hit the notes I aim for - but if I hit the wrong note - I adapt and work around the mistake as if it was intentional. I rarely bother with a 2nd take. I try to avoid cliche and being too predictable, so it’s mostly a cacophonous dissonant racket anyway. Consequently it really isn’t so obvious what’s a mistake and what’s on purpose. Don’t go thinking you can tell the difference.

I believe that there is going to be some psychological difference between doing a performance that I know only I will hear (and will never be heard again) and creating something that might be listened to by someone else. So I’ve decided to start recording my “performances” and putting them on this web-site. Perhaps that will sub-consciously prompt me to do them in a different way. I’m aware there’s a billion other people out there making music. My guess is that most people would probably prefer to listen to their music than mine.

If you’re very lucky I might read you some of my poetry.

Ye have been warned!
